# Merging Tags

Combine two or more tags into one, so all their contacts end up on a single tag.

Merge tags when you have duplicates or overlapping tags, like "Deep House" and "House". You pick the tag to keep (or create a new one), every contact moves onto it, and the other tags are deleted.

**A merge can't be undone.** The tags you merge away are deleted once their contacts move to the kept tag.

## How to merge tags

Go to the **Audience** → [Tags](https://manager.cymbal.co/tags) tab.

Check the box next to two or more tags you want to combine. **Merge** appears next to **Delete** once more than one tag is selected.

Select **Merge**.

Choose where the contacts should go:

* **Merge into a selected tag:** pick the **Tag to keep** from the tags you selected.
* **Merge into a new tag:** enter a **New tag name** to combine the selected tags under a new name. If that name matches a tag you already have, everything merges into that tag instead.

Confirm the merge. You'll see "Merging tags..." while it runs, then "Your tags have been merged."

## What happens when you merge

* Every contact on the merged tags ends up on the kept tag, with no duplicates.
* Anything that used the old tags now points to the kept tag, including tagged events, saved segments and campaign audiences, dynamic tag filters, automation triggers, ticketing and ecommerce auto-tags, [event auto tagging](https://docs.cymbal.co/help/segmentation/tags/event-auto-tagging) rules, page form options, and [Meta audience syncs](https://docs.cymbal.co/help/ads/sync-tags-to-meta-audiences).
* The other tags are deleted.
* While a merge is running, those tags can't be merged or deleted again until it finishes.

## What can't be merged

* **Dynamic tags.** Only regular tags can be merged. If you select a dynamic tag (one that fills automatically from targeting filters), deselect it before you merge.
* You also can't merge into a dynamic tag or a tag Cymbal generates automatically.
